When we first set eyes on Varenna, a charming village nestled on the eastern shore of Lake Como, we knew we made the right choice in staying there while exploring Lake Como. The picturesque views and quaint streets seemed like something out of a storybook, yet didn’t feel as touristy as Bellagio, which we visited during our 3 days in the region.
Getting to Varenna was a breeze. We were coming from Switzerland and the train made a stop in Milan. From there it’s just a short ride away, as Varenna has its own train station. It’s incredibly accessible whether you’re planning a day trip or a longer stay.
Walking through Varenna, we were captivated by its unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. We explored narrow alleyways, stunning villas and historic landmarks that are all a testament to the village’s rich heritage. The serene waters of Lake Como provided a breathtaking backdrop, making every moment feel really magical.
Exploring Varenna wasn’t just about seeing the sights; it was about experiencing the essence of Italian charm and hospitality. Just sipping a cappuccino at a local café or taking a boat ride on the lake was wonderful.
I recommend not rushing through Lake Como on a day trip from Milan. Two to four nights will let you appreciate the beauty of the lake and its towns so much more. Here is my itinerary for a perfect 3 days in Lake Como. We made Varenna our base, but this itinerary can work with just a few changes from any base within the Golden Triangle.

1. Visit Villa Monastero
Make sure to visit Villa Monastero. This villa is one of the most beautiful sights in Lake Como. The building has a rich history, starting as a monastery and later becoming a fancy patrician residence. It’s located near the central Piazza San Giorgio, so it’s easy to find.
You can explore the villa’s botanical gardens, which are filled with rare plants from all over the world. The gardens are set up in terraces, allowing you to enjoy breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Thanks to the mild climate in this area, you’ll find a variety of colorful and fragrant flowers all year round.
Inside Villa Monastero, there’s a museum with 14 lavishly designed rooms. These historical rooms make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time. Don’t forget to check out the Case Museo, which displays charming furniture and artwork from different eras.
Villa Monastero is great for both nature lovers and history buffs. It’s a peaceful spot to relax, take photos, or just enjoy the scenery. If you want a break from the hustle and bustle, this is definitely a place to see.
2. Explore Castello di Vezio
If you like short hikes, a trip to Castello di Vezio is a must. This medieval fortress sits atop a hill, with stunning views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains. It’s a great spot for anyone who loves a good uphill scenic walk.
You can reach the castle with a short, enjoyable hike from the center of Varenna. The path is lined with lush greenery, making it a pleasant journey. Along the way, you’ll get glimpses of the beautiful landscape that surrounds you.
At the castle, you’ll find a variety of things to see and do. There are museum exhibits inside that showcase local history and culture. You might even catch a falconry display, which is both educational and exciting to watch.
The panoramic views from the castle are breathtaking. You can see across Lake Como and into the valley. It’s a perfect place to take photos!
3. Stroll along Passeggiata degli Innamorati
When you visit Varenna, one of the most lovely things you can do is take a stroll along the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, also known as the Lovers’ Walk. This scenic walkway hugs the shoreline of Lake Como, with stunning views of the water and surrounding mountains.
Begin your walk at Varenna’s main square and follow the path all the way to the ferry terminal. The stroll is not only for couples seeking a romantic moment, but also for anyone who enjoys peaceful, picturesque views. The walkway features charming red railings and is anchored into the rock above the lake, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
The path is especially beautiful during sunset when the sky changes to pink and orange. Dim lights that illuminate the walkway come on at night. The lovely sights and serene sounds of the lake make this a memorable experience. If you’re staying the night in Varenna, I recommend that you do this walk again to experience it in a new light.
4. Relax at Lido di Varenna
If you need a break from exploring, head to Lido di Varenna. It’s a lovely spot to unwind. The Lido is part of the Olivedo Lido Bar and Restaurant, so you can enjoy a bite to eat or a refreshing drink.
The beach may not be sandy, but it’s perfect for stretching out on a sunbed. You’ll find deck chairs available, so it’s easy to relax while enjoying the beautiful view. It’s a popular place, especially during summer, so try to get there early to snag a good spot.
For those who enjoy a dip, there’s a boat dock nearby for quick access to the water.
5. Take a boat tour on Lake Como
Exploring Lake Como by boat is a must when you’re in Varenna. The shimmering waters and stunning landscapes create a perfect setting for a leisurely ride. Boat tours offer you a unique view of the beautiful villas and charming villas dotting the lake’s edge.
You can choose between small group and private boat tours. A guide can share fascinating stories about the region’s history and culture, so you can learn while you relax.
A private boat tour allows you to explore at your own pace and gives you a more intimate experience. You can pick your favorite spots to drop by. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy tranquil moments away from the crowd.
Alternatively, a small group tour gives you less flexibility but you’ll still have a great experience at a more affordable price point.
Rentals are easy and offer the most flexibility if you want to decide your route.
Another option is taking one of the regular ferries connecting Varenna with other beautiful towns on the lake. This is a convenient way to hop between destinations and see different parts of Lake Como. You can quickly and easily explore Bellagio’s sights this way. Whether you prefer a guided experience or a solo adventure, a boat tour on Lake Como is unforgettable.
6. Enjoy a meal at Il Cavatappi Ristorante
When you visit Varenna, dining at Il Cavatappi Ristorante is a must. This charming spot is tucked away in a quiet alley, offering a break from the busy tourist areas. It’s perfect for enjoying a delicious meal in peace and it won’t break the bank.
The restaurant has limited seating, with a few tables inside and some outside on the street. It’s cozy and popular, so booking a reservation is a smart move to guarantee your spot. Arriving early for dinner when they open is also a good idea if you want to grab a table.
Il Cavatappi is known for its excellent food. The menu features a variety of dishes, prepared with fresh ingredients, and is sure to delight your taste buds. The staff is friendly and adds a personal touch to your dining experience, making you feel right at home.
7. Visit Church of San Giorgio
The Church of San Giorgio is a must-see when you’re in Varenna. Right in the main square, this beautiful church has been part of the town since the 13th century. Its architecture is a great example of Lombardy style, with a stunning rose window and frescoes inside.
When you walk into the church, you’ll notice its unique three-nave design. The floor, made from Varenna’s famous black marble, gives the church an elegant touch. It’s a peaceful place where you can enjoy the quiet.
8. Hike the Sentiero del Viandante
Hiking the Sentiero del Viandante is a must-do if you have more a whole day or more dedicated to just exploring Varenna or more than a few days for the broader Lake Como region. This ancient trail offers stunning views of Lake Como and lets you explore the natural beauty of the region.
Strolling through chestnut forests and cultivated landscapes, you’ll enjoy the fresh air and peaceful surroundings.
Starting in Abbadia Lariana, the trail stretches 45 km along the lake’s eastern shore, leading all the way to Piantedo. You can pick a section that suits your schedule, like the scenic Bellano to Varenna part, which is known for breathtaking vistas.
This trail is manageable for most hikers and provides lovely spots for enjoying a break or a picnic. If you’re short on time and can only do a short hike, then combine a smaller section of this trail visit your visit to Castello di Vezio that I’ve listed above.
If you love history, the Sentiero del Viandante has a Roman heritage. It was once a commercial route, which makes your hike feel like you’re walking through history.
9. Have Gelato at La Passerella
Visiting Varenna, you’ll want to treat yourself to some delicious gelato. La Passerella is a spot you shouldn’t miss for this sweet delight. Located at Contrada Del Porto, it is known for its creamy and flavorful gelato. We found it to be the best in town.
The place has a friendly atmosphere, and the staff is welcoming and helpful. You might enjoy sitting by the water with your gelato, as there are steps nearby that offer a nice view. It’s a perfect way to take a break during your exploration of Varenna.
La Passerella has a great selection of flavors. Whether you like classic choices like chocolate and vanilla or something a bit more adventurous, you’re sure to find something you’ll love.
10. Shop at Varenna’s Artisan Markets
Don’t miss the chance to explore its charming artisan markets. These markets offer a great variety of local goods and crafts that you won’t find anywhere else.
Strolling through these markets is a delightful experience. You’ll find everything from small souvenir shops to family-run businesses. Each stall has its own specialty, whether it’s leather goods, textiles, or handmade soaps.
Pelletteria Denti is a must-visit. This family shop offers high-quality leather products that are proudly “Made in Italy.” You can find beautifully crafted belts, bags, and more to bring a piece of Varenna back home with you.
As you shop, take a moment to chat with the artisans. They are often happy to share stories behind their crafts and offer insights into the local culture.
11. Orrido di Bellano Gorge
Just a short train ride from Varenna, the Orrido di Bellano Gorge is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. This stunning natural wonder features dramatic cliffs and cascading waterfalls, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The well-maintained walkways and bridges allow you to get up close to the roaring waters and lush surroundings. It’s an easy and accessible trip by car or train that adds a touch of adventure to your stay in Varenna. Don’t forget your camera—this gorge is a photographer’s dream!

Where to Stay in Varenna

The villa’s gardens, stretching nearly two kilometers along the lake, are perfect for leisurely walks. You’ll find diverse plants such as roses and peonies, creating a colorful tapestry. Inside, the villa holds scientific artifacts and elegant rooms, showcasing a blend of history and beauty that draws you in.
Castello di Vezio
Perched on a hilltop, Castello di Vezio dates back to the Middle Ages. The castle played a key role in regional defense, and its construction reflects both military importance and strategic design.
Visitors can explore the towering walls and enjoy the stunning views of Lake Como and surrounding mountains. Interactive exhibits inside the castle share stories of its past, including fascinating displays of ancient weaponry. These serene views are perfect for photography or simply enjoying a moment of peace.

Lecco Branch of Lake Como
The Lecco Branch offers unique and scenic vistas that differ from other parts of Lake Como. This area is quieter but maintains the charm that makes the region famous. As you explore this branch, you’ll experience views of steep, rugged mountains that surround the calm lake.
The contrast between the placid water and dramatic cliffs is stunning. Several walking paths and parks allow you to stop and absorb the beauty of this less-traveled section of the lake.
